Discover Desi Winnipeg: South Asian businesses, temples and gurdwaras, community events and services, in a city where newcomers find room to grow.
About the city
Winnipeg, Manitoba's capital, grew up at The Forks, where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet. Its economy rests on manufacturing, aerospace, agriculture, transportation and health care, housing is among the most affordable of any big Canadian city, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights stands at the city's heart.
Many South Asian families came through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, and the community has grown quickly in The Maples, Amber Trails, Garden City and Waverley West. You will find Punjabi, Gujarati and other South Asian grocers, restaurants, temples, gurdwaras and mosques, along with many international students at the University of Manitoba and Red River College Polytechnic.
Winters are famously cold, but summers are warm and bright, and every August Folklorama fills the city with pavilions celebrating cultures from around the world, India among them.
